"In this film, the prison is a metaphor for France. This is not to say that being free or in prison is the same thing. I mean that in prison you recreate, exasperated, social mechanisms, psychological, ethnic, religious, and class that affect our social life "
Jacques Audiard
If we were to measure the civilization of a country, in this case of France, the condition of prisoners, then this film shows us a country very badly made. Jacques Audiard builds, without rhetoric and false morality, a harsh critique of a corrupt prison system, from which nobody comes out better, and thus restoring a portrait of France today. The prison where the convict Malik was sentenced to six years for assaulting a police officer, is in fact a true microcosm, where prisoners and guards in a mirror reflecting the company that has them, in a sense, products in a continuous return between external and internal, between those inside and those outside. Audiard explores this world through the eyes of Malik. The boy has learned, since his entry into prison, agrees that the eyes down low, considering to defend themselves. Completely useless though. Malik quickly understand what are the mechanisms that regulate a real parallel society, and above all learn to despise other people, teaches him the boss who decides Luciani in a certain sense of "adopting", commissioned the murder of an inmate who should not testify. For Malik is a real rite of initiation into life of crime. From that moment on, Malik stops in a hurry to look at the floor and accept orders only.
E 'smart, looking, learning the unwritten rules that coexist with the official ones, learn to defend themselves. And so the boy went to prison at 19, scared, miserable and filthy, was released after six years covered in the new, while waiting for the criminal gang that is built on trips when on parole. Malik now has the expression fair to those who tasted the sweet taste of command, now no longer satisfied. His first murder has taught him not being afraid to consider his stay in prison a real apprenticeship. But the look is also the visionary of a boy grew up fast, to give shape to his dreams, almost to the future. Her eyes shine with intelligence of the young Malik, in the early plans Audiard, and have the determination of who is ready to fulfill his fate. Its mission.
is a powerful film The Prophet , in which it is literally amazed at the amount of issues and situations that are explored sometimes angry quickly, others with quiet of those who thinks with his eyes closed, in solitary confinement for life. All punctuated by a director who knows how to be nervous, bustling, with a camera constantly on the protagonists, to investigate meticulously gestures, bodies, wounds, eyes. The pace never surrenders, Audiard keeps constant tension high, crossing through action and violence, past the labilissimi boundaries between who is in jail and who served his sentence in the street. Malik crosses, with the ease of a head, the delicate ethnic boundaries that govern the criminal world, learning the language of the mafia in courses dealing with the Arabs, addressing the Italian Mafia and Marseille. A truly multicultural society. A film capable of deep emotions the audience, throwing in a world where there is little room for the humanity of its inhabitants.
